Travel insurance and Aruba ED Card: Is it still a requirement to enter?

Aruba ED Card and travel insurance: Is it mandatory in 2026?

Currently, Aruba does not require you to present a travel insurance policy to get your Aruba ED Card approved or to pass immigration control. The Government of Aruba removed the mandatory official insurance some time ago, placing responsibility for medical expenses on the traveler.
However, it is highly recommended to have insurance when traveling to one of the most expensive healthcare destinations in the Caribbean. Assuming that "nothing will happen" is an unnecessary risk.

Why should I get travel insurance if it’s not legally required?

When we are at home, we take public healthcare or our local private insurance for granted. But when you cross the border into Aruba, the situation changes completely:

No international agreements

Aruba belongs to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but operates autonomously. This means that the European Health Insurance Card is NOT valid here.

U.S.-level healthcare costs

Centers like the Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital offer excellent care, but at private market prices. A basic emergency visit can cost 300 USD, and one night in the hospital can easily exceed 2,000 USD.

Repatriation

If you suffer a serious accident and need to return to your country in a medical aircraft, the cost from the Caribbean can range between 20,000 and 60,000 USD. Your government will not cover these expenses.

What should the best insurance for Aruba include?

Not all policies are suitable for the Caribbean. If you plan to explore caves, snorkel, or drive through Arikok in a 4x4, your insurance should include at least:

  1. High medical coverage: Look for coverage of at least 300,000 USD (or unlimited in plans like IATI Estrella).
  2. No upfront payments: This is key. Insurers like IATI, Heymondo or InterMundial pay the hospital directly. With basic credit card insurance, you usually have to pay first and then claim reimbursement.
  3. Emergency dental coverage: For basic issues like sudden tooth pain.
  4. Adventure sports coverage: Aruba is a wind capital. Make sure it covers kitesurfing, windsurfing, and diving.
  5. Companion travel: If you are hospitalized, the insurance should cover travel and accommodation for someone to accompany you.
  6. Baggage and theft insurance: Especially useful if you carry photography gear or drones.
  7. 24/7 assistance in your language: In stressful situations, you’ll appreciate not having to explain symptoms in English or Papiamento.

A traveler's tip: Take a screenshot of the QR code as soon as you receive it. That way, if you run out of data or the airport Wi-Fi fails right at the boarding gate, you'll have your receipt ready.

When is the best time to buy it?

Once you book your flights, get insurance. Why? Because it activates cancellation coverage. If something unexpected happens before departure, the insurance will reimburse non-refundable travel costs.

If you forgot and you’re already at the airport, you can still buy it from your phone, but note that many companies apply a "waiting period" (coverage may take 24–72 hours to become active).

Aruba ED Card vs. Travel Insurance

Don’t confuse the ED Card with travel insurance. Although both are arranged before flying, they serve completely different purposes:

  • Aruba ED Card (Mandatory): Your entry pass. An administrative immigration requirement without which you cannot board the plane. It provides no medical protection.
  • Travel Insurance (Recommended): Your financial shield. Covers everything from a medical visit for sunstroke to emergency repatriation or lost luggage.
Feature Aruba ED Card Travel Insurance
Purpose Immigration and customs registration Medical and financial protection
Requirement 100% mandatory for entry Recommended (optional)
Cost Sustainability fee (if applicable) Variable premium depending on coverage
Coverage Legal permission to stay on the island Health, theft, cancellations, and delays

Frequently asked questions about insurance and entering Aruba

Almost never. Most local insurance policies only cover within your country or have very limited international agreements.

Rarely. Some home insurance policies may cover theft of belongings outside your home, but not international medical expenses. Always check the fine print.

It usually has low limits (around €10,000–20,000). In Aruba, that can be spent in just a few days of hospitalization. We recommend supplementing it with a dedicated policy.

Not necessary, but save the PDF on your phone and, most importantly, keep the 24/7 assistance number handy.

Most companies do not allow it or apply a 72-hour waiting period to prevent fraud. Always purchase it before leaving home.

In an emergency, the hospital will ask for a credit card or proof of funds before treating you, which can be very stressful when abroad.
